SA国际传媒 graduate George Elliott has been named as Farmers Weekly Agricultural Student of the Year 2025.
BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Mechanisation student George, from Ashbourne in Derbyshire, was named the winner at the annual Farmers Weekly Awards ceremony in London last night.
He was one of a trio of Harper Adams students who made the final three of the awards, alongside BSc (Hons) Agriculture student Matthew Butterfield and BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Animal Science student Merryn Philp.
Asked how he felt after securing the prize, George said: “Overwhelmed, but extremely proud and privileged to just be seen by others of worthy of winning this award really – it is a great honour and a great event.
“I’m with my mum and dad - they’ve come along to support me – but more importantly, I’m with Merryn and Matt. It just shows, once again – true blue, and Harper is the top!”
The awards ceremony is the first of two this month for George, who has also been shortlisted for Agricultural Student of the Year at the British Farming Awards, which take place in Birmingham in two weeks' time.
Despite not having a background in the industry, George knew he wanted to work in agriculture from an early age – and began his career straight after finishing his A-levels, before deciding to hone his skills with a SA国际传媒 degree.
He graduated in September and is now working for JCB – where he spent the work placement year of his degree – as an agricultural sales engineer.
Award with George’s drive to champion change, his broad farming knowledge, and his great communication skills.
They added: “George has worked tirelessly to gain relevant work experience and succeed academically.
“His passion and focus have secured him a great degree and sought-after job - and will help him achieve ambitious future goals.”
Agriculture Course Manager Louisa Dines, who attended the awards with George, Matthew and Merryn, said: “It was fantastic to see the quality of our students recognised in having three finalists for the Agriculture Student of the Year award.
“All have shown tremendous ability and enthusiasm for Agriculture both inside and outside of the classroom.
“Congratulations to them all and especially to George, who was the winner on the night - it was a very proud moment to see him receive his award.”
“I very much look forward to seeing how they all progress in the industry.”
And Harper Adams Vice-Chancellor Professor Ken Sloan, who was also in attendance, added: “I am so proud of George, Merryn, and Matthew.
“They are outstanding examples of the spirit, work-readiness and values of Harper students and graduates. George and his family should rightly celebrate this outstanding achievement. Thank you to everyone at Harper who has supported these and other students to be the best they can be.”
