    Exceptional learning and teaching support recognised at SA¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Student Choice Awards 2025

    Exceptional learning and teaching support which helped make a real difference to students at SA¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ has been recognised at this year’s Student Choice Awards.

    The awards are shaped by student nominations and were made as part of the University’s annual Learning and Teaching Conference and coordinated by the Harper Adams . 

    Current Students’ Union Vice-President Erin Spruce and Harper Adams Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Lee, presented this year’s awards.

    Students' Union President Daisy Douglas said: “Once again, our students have chosen staff from right across the University for these awards – showing how much they value the support of Harper Adams staff of all kinds.

    “On behalf of all our students, I’d once again like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the winners, to every staff member nominated, and indeed to every staff member whose support makes a difference to our students.”

    Meanwhile, Professor Lydia Arnold added: “The breadth of the nominations and the wide variety of roles that this year's recipients hold is testimony to the one-team approach to student support at Harper Adams.

    "Awards for colleagues in laboratories, specialist facilities, in hospitality, and in teaching are all represented showing that the care and support and expertise given from all parts of this university is valued by students, and in important in making the difference to our students’ experience’.

    The full list of winners – and why they were nominated – can be read below:

    Exceptional Commitment to Sustainability 

    Winner: David Nuttall 

    David was chosen for his award for his commitment to using high-quality, sustainable produce in all the Harper catering outlets. 

    Citations mentioned his commitment to implementing exceptional initiatives using produce from our Future Farm, showcasing what embracing sustainable food security should look like. 

    Judges also noted David’s new initiative to utilise the Dairy Parlour and the Food Academy’s pasteuriser was further proof of his ongoing drive towards ensuring high quality sustainable food for all, across the University’s catering outlets. 

    Assessment and Feedback Hero 

    Winner: Paula Gwinnett 

    Paula was chosen for this award because of her decisive, expressive and forthcoming feedback. 

    Students noted that Paula gives honest, valuable feedback - which is informed by her years in industry and by her commitment to ensure assessment prepares students for their future. 

    Inclusion and Community Impact 

    Winner: Donna Coombes 

    Students and staff know Donna as the friendly face of the on-campus shop.

    What some may not know is that she is also a passionate champion of Harper Adams produce – and that of local artisan producers. 

    Those who nominated her commented on Donna’s tireless pursuit to provide excellence for students and colleagues alike.

    One noted: “Donna is working to develop the dream of having a functioning on campus farm shop, featuring not only all things Harper but supporting local businesses too!” 

     Student Support Champion 

    Winner: John Reade 

    John’s students said that he ‘always makes sure that wellbeing is a top priority across the cohort’ whilst also being there when the students needed him.  

    The students say that they couldn’t ask for a better course tutor. John has been praised for always being there to help his students, giving his all to every single student he sees, being there for them and never giving up on his students - no matter what. 

    Hidden Gem 

    Winner: Danielle Henderson-Holding 

    Danielle has been nominated for the Hidden Gem award for going above and beyond to help students with their HRPs and MRPs.

    She helps them with everything from ordering chemicals, understanding protocols, calculations, and how to set up and use equipment. Students said that her clear explanations really helped them to feel confident about their work and their research projects.  

    Excellent Teaching 

    Winner: Andrew Black 

    Andrew received a flurry of nominations this year. Students commented on how he related lectures to real life and practical situations, how he always checked on everyone’s understanding of lecture subjects and how he advocates for true professionalism and understanding in his field.  

    One student said: “Andrew has continually shown that he wishes to go above and beyond to help support the Land Management course and society. He will always provide high quality, engaging lectures that sell even the most boring topics.” 

    Outstanding Colleague Award 

    Winner: Kathy Smith 

    Kathy, and her dog Tess, are known across the University as the welcoming faces of the Placement Team.  

    Students said:

    • “Kathy knows everyone and takes the time to check in on people to see how they are doing.”
    • “Kathy’s relaxed, flexible personality means that she builds up a wonderful rapport with students based on trust and approachability.”
    • “Kathy has taken time to support staff, parents and students. This care has been appreciated by all concerned - students, staff and parents alike!” 
    • “Kathy embodies the true community spirit of Harper Adams University and this place would not be the same without her generous, warm character.” 

    Innovative Lecturer of the Year 

    Winner: Nick Covarr

    Nick was chosen to receive this award for his engaging lectures which not only foster engagement from everyone - but also provide a direct link to life outside the classroom.  

    Students commented on Nick’s clear passion for his subject matter and his enthusiasm and willingness to encourage people to explore the forestry and arboriculture industry. One student said: “The forestry module was by far the most enjoyable module that I have attended at my time at Harper Adams.” 

    Student Collaboration Award 

    Winner: Charlie Wright 

    Engineering Technician Charlie received his award for his support for the Harper Rally Team.

    He runs Rallying the Wright Way – organising countless events throughout the year, helping those in the team to succeed as well as helping them to find placements in motorsport. 

    As ‘an unsung hero that keeps the rally team moving’, students noted he has really helped them to gain confidence and experience in an industry that they never thought they would have a chance to be part of.
