    Meet the lecturer: Andrew Black

    1 July 2025

What is your job role at Harper?

I am a Senior Lecturer within the Harper Adams Business School and I also oversee all the 1st year Land & Property Management students in my role as Course Tutor.

    Where did you study?

I started at Harper Adams Agricultural College (as it was known then!) in 1998. It changed its name in 1999 to SA¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ College and then again in 2012 to SA¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½.

    What are your professional qualifications?

    • Fellow; Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
    • Fellow; The Agricultural Law Association
    • Registered Valuer; Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
    • Senior Fellow; The Higher Education Academy
    • Professional Member; Institute of Agricultural Management

What are your previous job roles?

As a graduate, I went to work for Smiths Gore Chatered Surveyors in Edinburgh. Here, I qualified as a Chatered Surveyor, proudly earning my 'MRICS' letters after my name! I assisted with the management of several privately-owned estates and acted for the Ministry of Defence and the Crown Estate.

After two years, I was promoted to the Lichfield office as a Senior Surveyor and spent four years managing estates and properties, primarily owned by The Church of England. Other duties included property valuation for the National Children's Charity and the Bournville Village Trust. A career highlight for me was selling a beautiful farm in Hereford back in 2006, which is now the home to the Chase distillery.

In 2008, I was recruited to join Carter Jonas as an Associate Partner involved with the management of private estates in Wales and managing marine properties for The Crown Estate. I also worked extensively within the utility industry, including acting for Network Rail, Sellafield and The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

    What is your specialist subject?

I absolutely love teaching all things to do with Utilities and Infrastructure. I have even built my own water main and minature electricity pylons to assist with my teaching. I also find teaching anything related to Agricultural Law fascinating, in particular old-style tenancies which allow for families to succeed one another and pass tenanted farms down through different generations. This is my 'specialist' area and I act as academic lead on anything to do with Agricultural Law across different modules and course areas.

What is your favourite module and why?

I would say the 2nd year module 'Compensation & Utilities' as it is a really practical subject and I get to demonstrate using my mini pylons! This is a really exciting growth area within the profession, which is only going to get bigger, with huge road, rail and utility projects requiring lots more new surveyors to make a difference.

Why do you like working at Harper?

Fundamentally, education is incredibly rewarding and everything I do here for my students feels like I am supporting them to advance themselves and do well within their studies and as graduates. The campus is a wonderful place to live and work with so much fresh air and open spaces, modern facilities and brilliant, supportive colleagues,

It is also a lot of fun to work here and I regularly help with student activities such as fundrasing activities, sports day and charity auctions.

What opportunities do you see for Harper LPM graduates?

The future has never been brighter for an LPM graduate as there are a huge number of opportunities out there in every field, ranging from traditional style estate management to multi-billion-pound electricity, ags, railway and even nuclear power stations!

We have seen tremendous increases in the type and variety of firms and organisations loooking to recruit our students and this is not showing any signs of slowing down. If you want a degree with great job prospects at the end of it, look no further than LPM.

Where can I get in touch with you if I have any questions about the LPM courses at Harper?
